November Highlights
November is a time of gratitude, and we are so thankful for another year of being a welcoming and safe environment in our community. Today is our birthday! Wheatberry has been a refuge for book lovers for 7 years! We plan to continue sharing the love of literature for many years to come. Thank you for making this dream possible.
The bookshop stayed busy this November! We had authors visit this store (Yennie Fer & Banunu and Roxanne Sams), we wrapped up a fabulous year of book club discussions, and we rolled out all kinds of new items for the holiday shopping season. Between the Downtown Holiday Open House and Small Business Saturday, the season is off to a great start!
Current Promotions
We brought back the much-loved "Blind Date" style promotion for Christmas. "Treat Your Shelf" offers a wide selection of surprise books that are already wrapped to go under the tree. Choose one for yourself or a friend based on the clues on each package. Keep it for yourself as a bonus gift on Christmas morning, unwrap it right away for a special treat during the holiday rush, or give it to a loved one so that you can share in the surprise.

Many downtown businesses are coming together to create a Nostalgic Holiday Event on Friday December 6. Keep an eye out for your favorite holiday characters, complete your Holiday Passport for a chance to win a "Major Award", and enjoy the many activities available. Register here for more information: https://downtownchillicotheholiday.eventbrite.com/

Our 3rd annual Stuffy Sleepover and Story Time is approaching! Children can bring a stuffy (not their favorite, please) to Wheatberry during the week of December 8. The stuffies will have a sleepover at the bookstore on Friday December 13. Families will receive digital photos of the stuffies having all kinds of fun. Past sleepovers have included hot cocoa and popcorn, snowball fights, and board games. Children can pick their stuffies up at Story Time on Saturday December 14 at 10:30am. We will read some Christmas stories, enjoy a treat, and do a craft.

If you find yourself needing to do some last minute shopping, we will stay open for a festive "Bookstore After Dark" shopping experience on Saturday December 21. From 6-8pm, the lights in the shop will dim, the Christmas music will be playing, and there will definitely be cookies.

Book Club Information
What a wonderful year we've had in our book clubs! Our fiction club has had the best discussions as we've revisited books that we read in school, and our nonfiction club looked at many perspectives as they considered the essay. We always take a little break in December, but are already looking to our 2025 season.
The fiction club will take on the theme of "Gold Medal" book club next year. We will spend the entire year reading award-winning books and talking about what is considered when novels are selected for prizes like the Pulitzer, the National Book Award, the Hugo, and others.
Our nonfiction club will be "Exploring Nature" through a mix of classic and contemporary titles meant to deepen our understanding and appreciation of the natural world.
Up-to-date information can be found in our book club Facebook groups: "Wheatberry Book Club" (https://www.facebook.com/groups/614654662325311) and "Wheatberry Nonfiction Book Club" (https://www.facebook.com/groups/539265630204255)
Bookseller Recommendation
Rebecca recommends "The Mighty Red" by Louise Erdrich.
"Set against the backdrop of the Red River Valley's sugar beet farming communities in the aftermath of the 2008 economic crisis, "The Mighty Red" weaves together the lives of a cast of unforgettable characters as they grapple with love, regret, and the unyielding forces of nature and history that shape their world.
"The Mighty Red" is delivered in short chapters and six distinctive parts. The first three introduce the town's characters and places. The remainder work through unraveled secrets and reunited lovers. While the novel centers around the love triangle between three teenagers, Gary, Kismet, and Hugo, it's also so much more.
It's a portrait of a farming community besieged by change, of younger generations of farmers imagining a future beyond the sugar beets that have depleted the soil and the toxic pesticides that have devastated not only the ecological balance but also their parents' health. It's an account of a town trying to heal from a horrific accident and a perceived betrayal. It's about finding ways to make the best possible choices from the few available, and living with the consequences either way. Overall, "The Mighty Red" is a moving read about a group of ordinary people doing the best they can with what they have."
