September Highlights
The Downtown Fall Open House was delightful! Downtown businesses are decorated for the season and looking so cozy. At Wheatberry, we brought back a seasonal display of our always popular "Blind Date With A Book" promotion. Through the end of October, readers can purchase a horror novel, thriller, romance, or cozy book without knowing the title! It's the perfect shopping experience for the adventurous reader.
We hosted several incredible authors last month, including Alyssa Nichols, Edmund Stone, and Neal Parks. Supporting local talent is incredibly important to our store and we are grateful to be a part of a community that feels the same!
"Banned Books Week" was the last week of September, and we took the opportunity to highlight some titles that have been restricted in various schools and libraries throughout our country.
On a final note, the beer that our staff crafted with Old Capital Brewing is on tap and is delicious! The Wheatberry Beer is a light American Wheat Ale packed with pounds and pounds of blueberries! Stop in and grab a glass at Old Capital Brewing, or have them put it in a DORA cup so that you can bring it to the bookstore and sip and shop!

October Book Club Information
For October, the "Back to School Book Club" is reading "The Scarlet Letter" by Nathaniel Hawthorne. This American masterpiece that tackles sin, guilt, and revenge is set in the Puritan Massachusetts Bay Colony during the years 1642 to 1649. It's a perfect October read! We will meet to discuss this classic work on Wednesday October 30 at 7pm in the shop.

Our Nonfiction Book Club "considers the essay" with another perfect October selection. "From Here to Eternity" by Caitlin Doughty chronicles death practices throughout the world with tenderheartedness, a technician's fascination, and an unsentimental respect for grief.
We will meet to discuss this book in the shop on Monday October 28 at 7pm.

Selected titles are always available in the shop for 15% off during the month that we are reading them.
Bookseller Recommendation
Katie recommends "The Golden Ticket: A Life in College Admissions Essays" by Irina Smith.
"'The Golden Ticket' is a little book with a lot to unpack. It's a memoir about the author's life as a Russian Jewish immigrant, literature professor, former Stanford admissions officer and private college counselor in Palo Alto, California. She narrates her story as a series of responses to college application essay prompts, which is an absolutely brilliant format. The behind-the-scenes look at the college admissions process is fascinating and illuminates the delicate balance between wanting what is best for our kids and the pressure that can quickly become toxic for both parents and their children. At the same time, the heart of the story is Smith sharing her deeply personal experience as a mother parenting her own three children and feeling the weight of similar (but very different) pressures.
Smith's writing is witty, funny, honest and authentic. I really appreciated how she was able to weave her love of literature into many parts of the narrative. She offers deep social commentary about what's really important and the true meaning of success. My biggest takeaway was compassion when realizing that we're all doing the very best we can."
You can find "The Golden Ticket: A Life in College Admission Essays" by Irina Smith at Wheatberry Books.
