February Highlights

Last month, we once again welcomed local author Rick Barnes to the shop to talk about his newest essay collection "In Other Words". Guests were treated to an enlightening talk from Barnes about the writing life and the inspiration behind some of his essays. Just two weeks after that lively evening, we were saddened to learn of Rick's passing. He will always be remembered as a friend of Wheatberry and a talented local author and musician. We will keep telling your story, Rick. (Photo credit: Gunner Barnes)

March Book Club Information
In our "Gold Medal Book Club", the March selection is "The Berry Pickers" by Amanda Peters, a novel that was awarded the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction. In this book, a four-year-old Mi'kmaq girl goes missing from the blueberry fields of Maine, sparking a mystery that will haunt the survivors, unravel a family, and remain unsolved for nearly fifty years. We will meet to discuss this novel on Wednesday March 26 at 7pm in the shop.

As our Nonfiction Book Club explores the natural world, we will read Elisabeth Tova Bailey's "The Sound of a Wild Snail Eating" for March. In this captivating little book, the author shares her insights and observations of a snail-turned-roommate during a difficult illness. We will meet to discuss this book in the shop on Monday March 31 at 7pm.

Selected titles are always available in the shop for 15% off during the month that we are reading them.
Bookseller Recommendation
Cathy recommends "Only the Beautiful" by Susan Meissner.
"This work of historical fiction is based on heartbreaking events in California in the 1930s and in Europe in 1947.
Author Susan Meissner focuses on the 'eugenics' movement and synesthesia, both of which are not well known in today's society. Eugenics, a sterilization program, targeted "inferior" or "less than perfect" children and was not abolished until 1979 with more than 20,000 people being forcibly sterilized. Synesthesia is a real condition where a person interprets senses differently, such as experiencing sounds as colors.
I enjoyed the connection between the well-developed characters of Helen, an American living in Austria as a nanny durring WWII and Rosie, a young girl who was orphaned when her family was killed in an accident. If you enjoy historical fiction, I encourage you to read 'Only the Beautiful' for both enjoyment and education."
